A few weeks ago, I watched The Wiz; I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve seen this movie. This time I really watched the movie. I never realized the positive and uplifting message of The Wiz even though Michael Jackson and Diana Ross sing Ease on Down the Road. If that’s not a positive message, I don’t know what is.

Life lessons from The Wiz

1. Ease on Down the Road. Do you struggle in life? How can you Ease on Down the Road and live a stress free life? Let go and let God. Give up the struggles in your life and surrender them to a higher power because you’ll feel much better. Be easy about life and stop judging yourself and others. Learn how to forgive and release yourself from the negativity around you.

2. Curb your tendency to feel and think negatively. Give your mind, body, and soul a rest from thinking negative thoughts. Your negative thoughts, feelings, and environment can manifest dis-ease in your body and mind.

3. Cultivate ‘good’ friendships. Diana Ross aka Dorothy met the Scarecrow (Michael Jackson), Tinman (Nipsey Russell), and Cowardly Lion (Ted Ross) who turned out to be loving and supportive. They didn’t think twice about facing Evelline alongside of Dorothy. They were also open and honest and didn’t hide their feelings.

4. Believe in yourself. Lena Horne aka Glinda the Good told Dorothy to believe. Ironically, Dorothy conveyed the same message to Scarecrow, but didn’t take her own advice. Believe in you and your talents, and others will believe in you.

5. Don’t allow others to overpower you. When Diana aka Dorothy first met Scarecrow (MJ), she noticed that he allowed the crows to belittle and talk down to him. They talked him out of having the power to get unstuck from the wooden pole. Dorothy told him not to allow those silly old crows to speak negatively over him and deter him from what he wanted.

6. You are courageous. You probably don’t think you have courage, but if you review your life thus far, you’ll probably find times when you were courageous. Think about it and journal about the times you were courageous.

7. Your life is yours to live. Diana aka Dorothy figured out that life is meant to be lived. Of course, going to Oz was one heck of a way to discover this. When she got back home, she eagerly ran up the steps and into her home. Her journey to Oz taught her that it’s all right to take risks. She was now a confident woman ready to venture out into the world.

8. Sometimes things aren’t as they seem to be. Dorothy and her friends discovered that The Wiz (Richard Pryor) was a phony. He wasn’t all great and powerful; he was a man whose hot air balloon took him over the rainbow and into another land. The Wiz was an illusion of a powerful man. Many spiritual gurus say, “Reality is an illusion. Try not get caught up within it.” For example, you may believe your fears are real, but they’re a figment of your imagination. How real is your reality? It’s something to think about.
